Commissioning a Horse (or Dog) Portrait – Everything You Need to Know

Everything you need to know about commissioning your own portrait, buying prints, or ordering from The Horse Artist.

What kind of artworks do you offer?

I’m a trained artist specialising in equestrian and animal portraiture. I offer:

  • Bespoke original oil paintings on canvas.
  • Pastel drawings (photorealistic pastel pencil on pastelmat).
  • Charcoal or pencil drawings for a contemporary, timeless feel.
  • Mixed media and watercolour paintings for energy and movement.
  • Framing service and bespoke engraved artists nameplates.
  • Mounted or framed prints of selected artworks.
  • Homewares – mugs, coasters, and prints inspired by horses and country life.
  • Gift vouchers for commissions, downloadable to print at home or posted to you.

Can I commission a portrait of my horse (or dog)?

Yes! I take commissions from your photographs and can create portraits of horses, dogs, or other animals - whether it’s a close-up head and shoulders, a full body study, or an action scene. I can even combine multiple animals from different photos into one artwork.

What materials and styles do you work in?

I work in oils, pastel pencil, and charcoal. My style ranges from traditional and lifelike to expressive and atmospheric. Every piece is created using high quality professional materials for longevity and beauty.

How long does a commission take?

Each piece is individually hand-painted or drawn, so timescales depend on the size, medium, and current waiting list. I’ll give you an estimated completion date when you book and keep you updated as your artwork progresses. As a general guide allow at least 6-8 weeks for an oil painting from booking to delivery. Drawings and mixed media are quicker as they do not require the same drying times, allow at least 3-4 weeks. I can sometimes create something quicker so please get in touch to discuss your commission. Please note that I am extremely busy from around Sept - Dec, so book your commission slot as soon as you can if you are hoping to gift a portrait in time for Christmas Day!

What do you need from me?

I’ll need high-quality reference photographs that are clear, well-lit, and in focus. The better the image, the more lifelike the portrait. I’m always happy to help you choose the best photos. I can use multiple photos to create the perfect pose and with the most detail, if you do not have a single photo that ticks all the boxes!

Can I include more than one animal?

Absolutely! I can combine several subjects in one portrait, even from separate photos. We’ll discuss layout and composition together before I start.

Do you offer framing?

Yes, framing can be arranged to suit your taste. Many clients prefer to frame locally, but I’m happy to provide ready-to-hang options with hand-selected frames that complement your artwork. I can usually find frames to match existing frames that you already have, or can choose frames to match your decor. I will provide you with a comprehensive selection with pricing to allow you to make an informed choice.

Can I have a nameplate enscribed with my horse's name?

Of course! I can provide artists nameplates in several metals and in a variety of fonts, proffessionally enscribed and fitted to your frame for the ultimate personalisation.

What are your prices?

Prices vary by medium, size, and number of subjects. You’ll find a guide on my Prices page, and I’ll always provide a no-obligation quote after we’ve discussed your commission. Gift vouchers for any amount are also available, ready to download and print at home or have a beautiful card posted to your chosen address.

Do you sell prints and homewares?

Yes! I offer a curated range of prints and horse & country-themed homewares such as mugs and coasters. These are perfect for horse lovers or as thoughtful gifts. They’re available to order directly through my Shop.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes, I’ve shipped artworks worldwide – from the UK to Europe, the USA, and beyond. I ensure every piece is carefully packaged and tracked for safe delivery. If you are ordering from outside UK I can provide a quote on delivering before the commission begins so please ask.

How do I order or book a commission?

Simply get in touch by emailing me, or by using my Contact page to send your enquiry and photos. I’ll reply with a quote, timescale, and payment details. Once booked, I’ll keep you informed at every stage.

What if I’m not happy with my portrait?

I always send a photo of your portrait before final approval. Minor tweaks can be made at this stage to ensure it’s perfect. Each commission is created with care and attention to capture your animal’s true character. No one knows your horse or dog the way you do, so I am always happy to take guidance from you and make any changes that you feel are neccessary to make your portrait truly perfect.

Can you work from photos of a horse or dog that has passed away?

Yes - and I do so with great sensitivity. Many clients commission portraits as a way to honour a much-loved companion. I’ll work with the best available photographs and take the time to create a meaningful piece. If you feel that none of your photos are quite right for a portrait, I am happy to use several to create a painting or drawing to really capture the likeness and personality in the way that you remember them. I am very happy to collaborate with you to create your perfect commemorative portrait.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes, beautifully designed gift vouchers are available in any amount and make a thoughtful gift. The recipient can then choose their favourite photos, medium, and timing for their own special commission. You can download your gift voucher to print at home, or I can send a proffesionally printed hard copy to your chosen address.

Any tips for taking good photos?

Good light, focus, and expression are key. Avoid dark stables or harsh shadows, and aim for natural light where possible. Make sure the eyes and details are sharp. I have a full photo guide available upon request if you’d like extra help.

Still have a question? I’d love to help! Get in touch via my Contact page and I’ll be happy to answer anything else.
